Transportation Eligibility and Guidelines

In accordance with New York State law and voter approval, the Babylon Union Free School District provides transportation to eligible students based on grade level and distance from school:

  • Grades K–6: Students residing ¾ mile or more from their school
  • Grades 7–8: Students residing 2 miles or more from their school
  • Grades 9–12: Students residing 3 miles or more from their school

Distance Measurement

Eligibility distance is measured as follows:

  • Grades K–6 (District Schools):
Distance is measured from the nearest point of the student’s property line to a central measuring point located at the intersection of Marlborough Road and Ralph Avenue.
  • Grades 7–12 and All Nonpublic Schools:
Distance is measured from the nearest point of the student’s property line to the nearest legal entrance of the school attended.

Transportation to Private and Parochial Schools

Transportation to nonpublic (private or parochial) and special schools is provided in accordance with New York State Education Law §3635.

  • Eligible students must reside more than 2 miles (Grades K–8) or more than 3 miles (Grades 9–12) from the school attended, up to a maximum of 15 miles.
  • Requests for transportation must be submitted in writing by April 1 preceding the school year.
  • Proof of age or residency may be required.

Transportation services are provided equitably to all students in similar circumstances and may be adjusted from year to year based on district needs.

Bus Stops and Transportation Procedures

Students who are eligible for transportation will be assigned to designated bus stops.

  • Bus stops are established at reasonable intervals to promote safety and efficiency.
  • The District may utilize centralized pickup locations rather than door-to-door service.
  • Parents/guardians may be responsible for transporting students to and from their assigned bus stop.
  • Students are expected to board and exit only at their assigned stops.
  • Stop locations are selected to allow students to wait for and cross roadways in the safest manner possible, given existing road conditions.
